Friday finally came and I was happy that I can leave on time. Having my evening plans to visit aunt cancelled, I decided to drop by Trumpet Praise to look for sth to get her, as a gift of appreciation and hopefully of comfort to her too.. I had been quite busy with my work, having many things to read up and learn in a short time. That evening, as I browse through the books in the shop and listen to the soothing music, I realise that I haven't had time to pause and think about life for a long time since the start of the year..
I read through the titles and summaries of the books, books especially on what she's going through. "10 hours to live" caught my eye. What if one person only have 10 hours to live? Is it about accepting reality? About coping with it? About how to live the 10 hours? I purchased it.
When I reach home, I decided to read abit of the book out of curiosity before passing it to her as a gift from us sisters. The book wasn't about dealing with the truth nor was it about what to do if you have 10 hours to live. It was a book of hope, on the power of optimism and faith. There is still hope. It was that moment that I felt to understood what she's going through. I definitely heard a lot about the illness but it was at that moment that I suddenly could feel it. It had not been easy. I was again reminded of how being alive every single day is already a gift in itself. I'm not a Christian, but I do respect all religion and their teachings. And the similarity across all is to have faith in life and in yourself.
People complain about life, such as the morning traffic, how the rapid fast life had made most ppl all pushy, moody and selfish on buses and trains.. But now that one accept it, the way forward is to emphatise and forgive. As quoted from a book, "Do not emphatise the dead. Emphatise the living, who can feel and hence know sufferings." There are bigger things out there, not just work, not just a quarel with a fren, not just looks and not just you. The world is moving continuously as you made every decision through life. You work your head off but your family needs you. You had a great quarrel and just hate your friend for being unreasonable but many more people out there awaits your friendship. You envy the beautiful and spend time working on your looks while the truth is your personality isn't any better. If you can't be responsible for your life, don't expect others to be responsible for you.
Maybe, it's time to take a step back, to pause focusing on grumbling about your life's obstacles or boosting your achievements, and to start thinking if there's other things that need your attention. It could be something that you had always wanted to do, or it could be someone you had always wanted to get back in touch. It could be someone who needs your attention, or something that you had not bothered about for a long time. I guess, it's all about having a balanced life. Not just being able to live through life as it is, but being able to live through life meaningfully.
Take this quiz: 1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world. 2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners. 3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America contest. 4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize. 5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor actress. 6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners. How did you do?
The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.
Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one: 1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school. 2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time. 3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile. 4. Think of a few people who have made you feel, appreciated and special. 5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with. 6. Name half a dozen heroes whose stories have inspired you. Easier?
The lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.
